Christmas Hangover

Christmas has come and gone again for the year. I found myself remarkably less festive this year for some reason and had a hard time getting jazzed up for the holiday. I saw the requisite Christmas specials (Rudolph, Charlie Brow, The Grinch), made cookies with the kids, decorated the tree (though I seem to be missing a box of ornaments and stockings), but somehow didn't really feel the Christmas Spirit. Maybe it was because the economy is in the crapper and every other news story was about how people are losing their jobs, losing their homes, charities are hurting, etc. I'll be happy to get the tree down (this weekend hopefully) and put it all away until next year. I'm hoping for a better turnaround next year, complete with jingle bell earrings and a Santa hat. We'll see.

The kids made out like bandits, as usual. They received laptops from the g-parents so they've been latched onto those like leeches. I did not grow up with computers. Our family got one when I was in junior high (I think, it might have been high school) and it was a family computer, thus not to be monopolized by one person. We also didn't have the internet or the technology the kids do nowadays. We had an Atari system with Pong and Breakout being the games of choice and we thought that was pretty fabulous. My kids each have a Nintendo DS. They also have an Xbox (courtesy of my husband who wanted to upgrade his), a Nintendo Wii and a Playstation 2. There's no end to the video game joy for them. So when my youngest said she was bored and there was nothing to do a few days before Christmas, I had to gawk at her a bit. I'm sure my parents thought the same thing when I was a kid since we had tv, cable, Atari and other items of personal entertainment. Guess it's a generational thing.

New Year's is just around the corner and I'm amazed at how fast the time flies. Before we know it, Christmas will be back around again. Thus being the time of resolutions, I've decided to state mine early. Of course, I will try to lose weight. I will exercise more (won't take much, don't exercise much at all now) and I will have my family eat healthier. We are way too familiar with McDonalds, Wendy's, Burger King and Chik-Fil-A. I will also try my best to curb our spending. We have way too much debt and need to get that fixed as soon as possible.

I'm hoping 2010 will be a much better year on the job front. I can't complain because I'm gainfully employed unlike many others. I'm hoping the jobs will be back and everyone, or at least the vast majority, will find jobs. I'm hoping that less people lose their houses. I'm hoping the banks start lending more and the credit card companies stop behaving like douchebags. Well, I can hope right? I'm hoping the conflicts (wars? Are they both considered wars?) in Iraq and Afghanistan come to an end so all the men and women over there can come home safely to their families. I'm hoping the VA gets their heads out of their rear ends and treats the vets with the dignity they deserve and deliver on all the promises. I'm hoping for peach on earth and goodwill towards man. Maybe it's a little late as that seems to be a Christmas-style wish, but we can hope and dream right? Let's all start by being a little nicer to each other. I'm hoping that's a trend that will catch on quickly and spread like wildfire. Be nice to each other, obey the Golden Rule and maybe we can make this a better place to be.

The Tiger Controversy

Okay, so everyone and their brother has heard the flack over Tiger's alleged "transgressions" with women that were not his wife. I admit that this is pretty sleazy and definitely a PR nightmare for someone who has branded golf forever with his image, but do I think it's a travesty worth destroying the guy over? No. Look, he's a dog that cheated on his wife with a bunch of women, if rumor is to be believed, and not one of them, I think, look better than his wife. Just sayin'. Thought you were supposed to trade up when you cheated, but that's neither here nor there. He didn't get caught doing drugs, robbing someone, murdering someone, killing puppies, or anything else especially heinous. It's something that should probably have been kept in-house and dealt with privately between his wife and him. For sponsors to drop him like a hot potato is more than a little bit extreme. I'm sure there are plenty of athletes/celebrities out there that have done far worse and they are still being courted left and right by sponsors for endorsement gigs. Maybe I'd feel differently if I had been put in that situation, but I haven't so whatever. I'm sure everyone knows at least one person that has cheated on their significant other. Did you immediately say they were a bad person and cut all ties? Probably not. Again, just sayin'. I think Tiger should just come out and say "screw y'all" since everyone is hating on him anyway. There's not much he can do to make public opinion swing his way so I say embrace it. Divorce the wife, make sure your kids are taken care of and spend time with them, but go out and be a total horn dog. Can't tarnish his image any further right?

On a completely different note, am I the only one wondering why she didn't change her name or at least hyphenate after marrying Tiger Woods? I mean, you're married to one of the most, if not the most, famous and recognizable athlete in the world, and you keep you maiden name? Maybe it's a Swedish thing. I don't know. Just got me thinking. Well, that and the fact that when they met she was working for a pro golfer as an au pair with her twin sister. Really? You need pretty, blonde, Swedish twins as your nannies? How many kids do you have? Unless the number is in the double digits I can't imagine really needing two. Again, maybe it's just me.

They should have lost

The Saints are now 12-0. If you saw any of the game on Sunday, you know that this shouldn't have happened. The Saints tried their best to lose on numerous occasions this week but somehow pulled out the win. If not for the crazy plays and some luck running their way on replay, they would be 11-1. The interception/strip fumble recovery for a touchdown should be on all the highlight reels for a while. Robert Meachem should play defense and show those guys how to strip the ball because that was crazy. They should be giving Meachem the game ball on that. They should also send some flowers to Shaun Suisham for missing a chip shot field goal. The look on Jim Zorn's face said it all. He knew that could be it and it was. Crazy. And who do they have left? They have to play in Atlanta which could go either way depending on if Matt Ryan and Michael Turner play. Both were out this week and the Ealges handed them a severe butt-whooping. They play Dallas at the Superdome which I would hope would be a win but you never know with this team. The last couple of times they played Dallas it went the Saints way, but karma has a way of evening things out. Could be ugly. They play Tampa at home which on paper should be an easy win, but it took them a while to warm up in Tampa last time they played. The Redskins were supposed to be an easy win too and look how that turned out. And last, but not least, they play in Carolina. John Fox could be on the bubble and it may be his last chance to really stick it to 'em so don't be surprised if this game turns ugly quick. Besides the fact that the defense consists of walking wounded. Everyone and their brother is broken and by the end of December there could be no one left. Not sure if the undefeated season will come to fruition.

On a lighter note, the 'Bama Tide crushed the UF Gators which was a sight to see. I felt kinda bad that I was chuckling at Tim Tebow's misery, crying on the sidelines. And then I heard other people were doing the same thing. Sure I may be going to hell, but at least I won't be alone. After hearing everyone and their brother (that includes you Gary Danielson) extoling the virtues of Tim Tebow, it was nice to serve them up some humble pie. People down here seem to think he walks on water, and maybe he does, but much like any other team that I hear way too much of, e.g. the Patriots, USC, Red Sox and Yankees, I like to see them set back a notch. Saturday's SEC Championship did not disappoint and I really hope that either Mark Ingram or Colt McCoy end up with the Heisman. If Tebow gets it again, it will be a travesty.

Nebraska has to be kicking themselves right now. Their game was so much closer than the SEC Championship and I'm sure TCU/Boise State/Cincinnati are all wanting to kick them too. Oh well, one more year that the BCS eludes the playoff question. Bowl season should be interesting this year.

On to my complaint of the day. I read an article where the higher-ups at AIG (the company that had to be bailed out by us taxpayers because they just couldn't fail) are threatening to quit if their compensation is cut. Really? You sucked at your job so bad that you almost tanked the company, asked the taxpayers for a handout and now when the pay czar said that he should cut your compensation you say you're going to quit? I say go ahead. Find another job someplace else with that glowing recommendation on your resume - I worked at AIG when the company went bottom up. Please hire me to run your company into the ground. Of course in today's era of golden parachutes and rewarding incompentent behavior, they probably would land a cush gig without a problem. Am I the only one pissed off about this whole thing? You have one of the highest unemployment rates in forever, the economy barely has a pulse and you have the cojones to complain about your pay bonuses? I say they should get their pay cut and see how everyone else has to live on less than $1M a year. Just sayin.

Perfect So Far

So the Saints did it and told all those haters out there to suck it. They routed the Pats last night 38-17 and Brees was absolutely redonkulous in his passing. 158.3 passing rating. 158.3!!! The busted coverage that led to Devery Henderson's touchdown was crazy looking. Devery didn't even have to run, I think he just jogged into the endzone after the pass. What's the craziest part? The Pats gave up with over 5 minutes left in the game. Granted they were down by 3 touchdowns, but c'mon. If you're Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, former multiple Super Bowl winnders, don't you at least try? Shouldn't you make an effort? Nope, they pulled Brady and put in Hoyer (might be spelling that wrong), an MSU grad. Oy.

And how about Mike McKenzie? Did I call it or what? After only about a week and half, two weeks and he's playing like he never left. Interception, broken up passes, crazy tackles. Yeah Mike, get some! Think he's looking to keep a job even after all the busted secondary players get better. They best keep him too. It was a fabulous game to watch and I'm sure all the crazy drunk fans in the Superdome were partying well into the night. Good times!

On another unrelated note, what's up with the couple that crashed the White House state dinner? How do you get in without an invitation and what does that say about the Secret Service and their skills? Just sayin'. Wasn't the first time they busted in on something they weren't invited to. I'm sure everyone has seen the story where the chick said she was a former Redskins cheerleader and managed to get in on the halftime festivities for the cheerleader alumni. You'd think someone would be asking some questions or even a quick, "I don't remember you being here." Again, just sayin. But what happens? They get their names all over the media, interviews, probably a book deal, maybe a television deal and they get what they wanted from the beginning...notoriety. Stop talking to these people. Stop letting stupid people doing stupid, and possibly illegal, things from profitting from them. Nowadays you can be "famous" without having to do a single thing that benefits society. This trend needs to stop right now!

Also, the fine for Serena Williams. Crazy huh? But she deserved it. If she's upset about it, don't act like a psycho and you won't get fined. Just sayin. Tiger Woods and his accident. Eh, his business what happened but makes you wonder why the wife felt the need to break out both of his back windows - driver and passenger side. You'd think after breaking out one you could unlock the door and open it up. Again, just sayin.

Anything else? Nope, guess that's it for now.

Are you ready?

So the most highly anticipated game is on tonight (well, highly anticipated for me). New England and New Orleans. Battle of the News (okay, super corny but thought I'd put it out there). Should be a good game. Hope the Saints secondary are healthy enough to play. Although they signed Mike McKenzie again which I'm hopeful for. I like Mike and missed him this season. Too bad he's coming back because they have no one else.

Can I ask, why is everyone talking about how New England is preparing for this game? What about the Saints? How come no one is asking about how they prepare for Brady and Belichick? Just wondering. I think Peter King may have jinxed them by picking them over the Pats by 4. We'll have to see.

So I'm full of turkey and disappointment at the routing the Lions were handed by the Packers. Oy! Poor Matty, I give him credit for playing but it didn't seem to be going his way at all on Thursday. I guess he was miked up, but I must have missed the portions where he was groaning and writhing in pain. Nice. Nothing says giving thanks like moans from a groan man after a shellacking.

Crazy days of football for college. I think this may be the year that forces the powers that be to seriously consider a playoff setup for the championship. How can you possibly tell an undefeated Boise State or TCU that they can't play in the national championship? I realize they play in the WAC and MWC, respectively, but still. I mean the top five right now are UF, Alabama, Texas, TCU and Cincinnati. Who would have thought at the beginning of the season this is how it would look? UF or Alabama will be eliminated from the hunt after the SEC championship (I'm hoping Alabama wins, but my pick doesn't usually prevail when rooting against UF), and the possibility is there for UT to lose in the Big 12 championship, but then you have to pick from three teams who all have a legitimate argument to play the big show. What to do?

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly - Not necessarily in that order

This weekend, as all UM/OSU fans know, was the weekend for football. Everyone who cheers for the maize and blue or scarlet and gray know what weekend this was. Too bad the Wolverines didn't show up for the game. Well, that's unfair. They didn't do that bad. If not for that initial score by OSU (the fumble in the endzone by Forcier) it may have been a completely different ball game. Regardless, Michigan lost...again and OSU is on their way to the Rose Bowl. Ugh. I'm sure Rich Rodriguez was thinking, well we may suck but if I can win against Ohio State, it will all turn out okay. Guess he's worrying about his job security now. I would be. Two straight years of missing bowl games will have any coach revising the ol' resume.

The Lions won. I say again, the Lions won! Right now, Matthew Stafford is the stud du jour because of his guts playing with his possibly dislocated shoulder, throwing for the winning touchdown with no time left on the clock. Yeah, it was against the Browns which is almost like saying you beat the Raiders, but still, a win is a win and the Browns had like a 24-3 lead...in the first quarter. I was like many naysayers, thinking this was a death knell for the Lions, because they aren't exactly known for coming from behind with that type of deficit. And yet, they did. Brady Quinn must be pretty pissed after that game. He had four touchdown passes and still lost. Sucks to be Eric Mangini today, he of the "I called a timeout to let Matt Stafford back in the game" notoriety.

The Saints won again, but it was against the Bucs which isn't saying much. Bill Belichick is now saying, “I don’t think there’s any better team in football than the New Orleans Saints.” Not sure if this a good thing or a bad thing. I'm more of the glass half-empty kinda gal, so I'm thinking this is bound to jinx them. Monday night could be one ugly game. Regardless, Geaux Saints!

Pittsburgh is now out of QBs or so it seems. Big Ben was concussed (or so it looks) and the backup Charlie Batch (he was on the Lions!) has a messed up wrist and could be out the rest of the season. I think Mike Tomlin is now swimming up the proverbial creek looking for a paddle and he may be left with some QBs that were left by the wayside. Garcia seems to be the pick everyone thinks they are going for. Of course, Cleo Lemon's name has been thrown out there too. Yeah, not sure about that one. How about Joey Harrington (Lions again! And the Dolphins, and the Falcons, and the Saints...)? No one is talking about him, but I'm just sayin'.

It is now out that Kyle Boller (now of the St. Louis Rams) is dating Carrie Prejean. Well, we all know how I feel about her. Wonder if they sit together and have quiet debates about how Christian they are. Just sayin'. Bleh. What happened Kyle? Guess he has too much time on his hands since he hasn't been playing much in the last couple of years. May be playing soon if the reports of Marc Bulger being concussed are accurate.

The Raiders won. Yes, the Raiders won against the Bengals. Guess pulling JaMarcus was a good idea. I liked him as much as anyone else. After all, he's from LSU, but apparently that was just what they needed. Maybe there will be a resurgence from the bottom teams to take over the NFL. That would be cool.

Guess that's enough football for now. More to come. :)

No Fun League

The latest in Chad Ochocinco's (aka Johnson) long list of entertaining antics has earned him a $20K fine from the NFL. While I can appreciate the fact that the NFL needs to keep a reign on certain types of behavior, I'm starting to believe that they really have nothing else to do but to pick on certain players and have absolutely no sense of humor whatsoever. Even the official that he pretended to give the dollar to just laughed it off. They fined Michael Vick less for giving the fans the bird which I consider far more inappropriate. They have fined him for using "props" during his celebrations in the end zone. They fined Randy Moss for simulating mooning the crowd. I think the whole thing is stupid. All I can say is, I hope they're sending all these fines to a good charity.

*Note* After I originally posted this I found an article that said Jay Cutler was fined $20K for abusive conduct towards an official. (He complained about a non-call to Ed Hoculi. As one commenter said, "I guess if you're not Tom Brady, you can't ask the refs for a call." Excellent point if I do say so myself.) Of course, Tommie Harris was only fine $7,500 for punching a guy during the game. If that doesn't solidify my point about the skewed priorities of the NFL, I don't know what does. :)

Make it stop!

Carrie Prejean, of Miss California USA notoriety, is apparently hitting all the media outlets to promote her memoir (really?). Why are they still talking to to this woman? Just wondering.

Look, I understand that she got dealt a hard card for expressing her opinion at the Miss USA competition, and I don't think that was especially fair. But this is a free country where you can say what you want, and have someone say what they want right back at ya! I do take exception to the fact that ever since this "controversy" she has been on the speaking circuit spouting how Christian she is and how she was smeared for what she believes in. Ugh. I think she was smeared for being a complete and total hypocrite. Once again, just my opinion. But if you say that the Bible says this and you believe that is right, you should probably practice what you preach. Just saying.

She said the Miss California pageant officials violated her privacy for telling everyone she got implants. Honey, the second you walked onto the stage in a bikini, everyone knew you had implants. It wasn't a state secret.

She said that her topless photos were unintentional. Whatever! When you wear nothing but a pair of underwear and an open vest, you are definitely doing something intentional.

The sex tape that everyone is talking about? She said that nothing is private anymore. Well, not everyone is stupid enough to film themselves having sex (even if it is with themselves, you know what I mean Carrie). Get over yourself.

And why is anyone listening to this girl? She is certainly not the type I would tell my daughters to idolize or look to as a role model. What has she taught anyone? That if you don't get your way, bitch and complain and say everyone is attacking you and pull your Bible card so that it looks like your some virtuous person.

And the claim that like Sarah Palin, she is being attacked for speaking her mind, I'd say you're being attacked for being the poster child of hipocracy and idiocy. Sarah Palin is a whole other post that I won't get into right now.

We have become a generation of having people being famous for all the wrong reasons. The rewards for this kind of behavior needs to stop. We need to stop buying their books, reading their stories, and watching their shows. Maybe then we can have some peace and quiet. Amen.

Sportsmanship

So I don't think anyone in the vicinity of a television with ESPN or a computer with the same has not seen what University of New Mexico women's soccer was hit with last week. For those of you not in the know, just look at this. As a mother with a young daughter in soccer, I'm horrified by this girl's actions and even more so by the lack of action of the coach, refs and her teammates. How do you let that happen?!? I'm quite sure that if I were playing with this girl I may have taken her out myself if I saw anything like this happen. We wonder where the blame lies, and while I think more should have been done to prevent this from going on through the whole game, it should be worth mentioning that I hear parents at my daughter's soccer game telling their kids to use their elbows and "get the ball anyway you can!" They're 6 and 7. How ridiculous is that? Something tells me this girl's parents were leading the way to this behavior and maybe that's why she got a place on the team, because of this aggressiveness. Hopefully, the University of New Mexico coach and athletic director have scores of hatemail signaling that this behavior is far from okay. I know it's a game and it can get rough, but this borders on criminal in behavior. Not saying that BYU didn't have their own cheapshots but the reaction seemed to far outweigh the initial offense. Unfortunately, I think the entire UNM team was in on some stuff that we just didn't see, ie. the girl who kicked the ball into the BYU player's face while she was lying on the ground. I'm just sayin'. Your parents must be so proud.

So much stuff, so little time

So it is now the sixth week of NFL play and the Saints are undefeated (I hesitate to write this and thus jinx my boys). How awesome are they doing? And not just the offense which is really rocking with all their stud receivers and running backs, but the defense is doing pretty great too. I hope we don't have too many bandwagon jumpers because you know it's happening. Where were you guys when they only won 3 games? Exactly.

Florida won against Arkansas on Saturday simply because the officials wanted Florida to win. That sounds harsh but it was way too obvious to everyone not a UF fan that all the calls were going Florida's way. Ugh. It was horrible and Florida needed every one of those calls to win. There's no way they should be ranked #1. Alabama are way better so far, as much as it pains me to praise Nick Saban.

Michigan finally whacked a team. Too bad it was Delaware State, but a win is a win and I'm not complaining.

I have been watching the "Jon and Kate Plus 8" divorce drama. I know, it's like watching a train wreck; you can't look away as much as you try. So the latest thing is that TLC is suing the dad for breach of contract, the mom is going to be the one on the tv show (because everyone loved her sincerity every week, right?) and now the kids are distressed from the whole thing. She says it's because they're not filming right now and that's why the kids are so upset. Geez, you think it might have something to do with your crazy bad divorce and seeing their respective parents plastered all over the tabloid magazines and tv every second? I'm sure the older kids get to hear all kinds of stuff at school and who knows if the younger ones really know what's going on. Listen, Kate, you need to get your priorities straight and take care of you kids. If you're having trouble making ends meet, downsize. That 18 kids and counting family visited their friends that had like 16 kids and they lived in a house that was less than 2000 sq. ft. and they were making it. You really don't need a multimillion dollar home, lavish trips, etc. Take care of the kids, get them and yourself out of the limelight and love each other. 'Nuff said.

I really want to see that Zombieland movie. It looks way funny and has Woody Harrelson in it. Woody! It's gotta be good if he's in it right? Any comedic zombie movie with Woody is just screaming good to me. :)

Another sign that everything comes back around, they're going to have "V" on ABC this fall. I hope they have a Robert England cameo as a vegan alien dude.

Guess that's enough for today. More to come. :)

Where do I start?

I hate stupid people. Have I mentioned this before? I also hate people who cannot take responsibility for their own actions. We have become a nation of people of it's never your fault, it's someone or something else that is causing all your problems. What brought this on you ask? Well, let's start with this lady. She went back to school to get a better job. Who doesn't, right? Well, now she's blaming the school for not getting a job. Welcome to the real world, chica. Just because you have a degree doesn't guarantee you a good job. She's now suing the school because she says they promised her a job after graduating and they aren't delivering. She also says that the school was biasedly (is that a word?) helping students that had 4.0 GPA instead of her with her 2.7 GPA. Gee, ya think? And she wonders why employers aren't beating down her door. She wants all her tuition money back. Good luck with that. If I were the judge on this case, I'd be like, "Not only are you not getting your money back, but you need to pay for all the fees and costs that are associated with dealing with this b.s." Probably won't happen, but I'm just saying.

Then there are these two ladies. Look, I realize that as journalists that they try to get hard hitting stories and want to go where most people don't to get these stories, but when you get arrested for entering North Korea illegally, I don't think the American taxpayers should foot the bill for Bill Clinton having to go over there to negotiate their release. Lesson here, don't go to a communist country that you're not allowed to be in!

Which leads to these buttheads. Again, don't go where you're not supposed to (see paragraph 2 of this rant). If the area is in a region where borders are a bit hazy or undefined, stay clear of there. I find it somewhat hard to believe they couldn't find someplace else to hike besides the Iran border. Call me crazy.

I'm not trying to be overly callous but when the country is in the state that it's in, I think it's wrong to say we can pay for all the efforts to get you back when you irresponsibly put yourself in harms way. These are not stupid people, but they acted stupidly. Well, the jury is out on the first lady.

Maybe I need to lay off the Red Bull at life.sa.laugh@hotmail.com.

Instant Classic

So I saw The Hangover a couple of weekends ago. As the post title says, Instant Classic. I think this movie will surely be what all bachelor parties are measured against. It was crazy funny and I think I'll have to buy it simply to hear some of the lines again. "I'm sure you get this question all the time, but did Caesar actually live here?" - Checking into Caesar's Palace in Vegas. :) Classic! "It's not a purse, it's a satchel. Indiana Jones wears one." Oh they just get better and better. It should say something that this movie was relegated to one of the smaller theaters since it's been out a bit and it was still almost full of people. Awesome.

So we had to travel back to LA last week due to a death in the family. Sad, but it went as well as you could expect. Got to see a lot of the relatives and eat some good food. Well, on the way home got stuck in Mobile, Alabama...for two and a half hours. This is why people make jokes about Alabama. The great state of Alabama took a six-lane highway and merged it into two lanes to go through the nifty tunnel. Well, obviously the drivers thought it was a good idea to merge conscientiously. Not so much, so we got stuck waiting to get through this traffic jam while these buttheads raced to the point where they were forced to merge and cut in front of people. Gotta love it. I'm surprised there aren't more instances of road rage on I-10.

Tragedy Abounds

Well, you can't turn on a television, radio, pick up a paper or look at the internet today without seeing some sort of coverage of Michael Jackson's funeral. While any death has a certain sadness about it, I don't know if his death garners the type of media coverage it is currently generating. I find it ironic that there is so much news coverage of his funeral when there wasn't this much coverage of his life in the last decade or so. He was a great singer and performer, weird but good, and his legacy is sure to live on forever but do I think we need 24/7 inundation by the media of his funeral? No. Sad part is there was story about 8 soldiers dying in 2 days in Afghanistan but it was waaayyyyyy down the page from Michael Jackson, Steve McNair and Sarah Palin. Think we have our priorities skewed a bit? I'm just saying.

Now hearing about Steve McNair's death was a shocker. Found out about that on the radio as we drove from Louisiana back to Hurricane Central, aka FL. Then it comes out he's still married but was dating this 20-year-old waitress who may or may not have committed a murder/suicide on him and herself. See this should be another cautionary tale about who you fool around with as her family and friends are telling the media that she was telling them that he was leaving his wife and marrying her, etc. Haven't heard that one before right? Have these men not seen Fatal Attraction? Have they not heard of Amy Fisher? Guys, if you're going to cheat on your wife with some young thing, especially if you're rich and/or famous, and tell her you're leaving your wife and you don't, things could get messy. The media said they met while she was waiting tables at Dave & Buster's when he was dining there with his family. Tacky. What's wrong with these people? Ugh. Sorry Steve, I know you didn't deserve to die for just happening along some psycho hosebeast but man, cautionary tale.

On a lighter note, Sarah Palin resigned from the governor's office of Alaska. If I were an Alaskan I wouldn't know if I should be happy or worried. Look, everyone is talking about the possibility of her running for President in 2012. I was scared when she was running for Vice-President in 2008. It's not because she's a woman, because I'm a woman and know that a woman can do the job just as well as a man as long as she's equally qualified, but because she seems not all there. Any woman that winks at the camera during a vice-presidential debate seems a) patronizing and b) slightly goofy. Also, if she's not able to fulfill her duties in the governor's office, what makes the GOP think she would be able to fulfill the duties of the President of the United States? Hello? She said that the Letterman jokes contributed to her stepping down. Seriously? Basically, they called you and your kid a name and you're quitting? It's not nice but you're in a public office for the world to see. What did you expect? Poor Chelsea Clinton got called all kinds of names and you didn't see everyone jumping down the throats of the media. You get over it. Is that how the office of the POTUS would be run if you were there? "Iran said we were horrible people, I'm quitting." Yeah, that would totally work. Why are people still listening to this woman? Her fifteen minutes of fame was up llllloooonnnnnggggg ago.

Random Thoughts Update

So I've been reading all this flack that David Letterman caught because he made some joke about Sarah Palin's daughter. I personally don't see what the big deal is and I don't think he should have had to apologize for it. I don't think it was especially offensive or degrading to young women. I am of the mind the she, Mrs. Palin, is trying to cling to her fifteen minutes of fame as long as possible. I say, give it up lady! No one cares what you think or what you have to say. If I were a tax-paying resident of Alaska, I would be wondering if I were paying for said daughter of the governor's trip to New York to include the Yankees game. Why is she there? What possible official capacity would require her to bring her daughter? I'm sure there will be some excuse, but honestly, if she's there in official gubernatorial capacity, her daughter should be at home with the other kids. I'm just sayin'.

Football season is just around the bend. Say it with me, "YEAH!!!" I think I need to find a sport to observe between football postseason and preseason. That's a good six months of no football which is really just unacceptable. I watched the Red Wings in the Stanley Cup Finals, but oy. More on that debacle later. I'm hoping for a resurgence of the '06 Saints. While I will miss Deuce McAllister, I have high hopes for Lance Moore and Pierre Thomas. Those kids are good and I hope Payton uses them well.

On the flip side of that coin are my poor beleaguered Lions. While they can't do worse than last season (unless the NFL decides to add more games to the schedule) I'm not sure if I'm so optimistic on their chances of pulling out a winning season. I would like to have the optimism of some of the Lions, but I'm a little more realistic. Winning one game at this point would be good.

The Detroit Red Wings. The one team that seems to be pretty much consistently good all the time. I mean, the have "Hockeytown" in the ice at Joe Louis Arena; that right there should say something. I don't know that much about hockey, but I tried to watch it. I still don't know what the difference is between icing and offsides, etc. but man what a disappointment. Ugh.

Summer movie season is upon us. I have seen, since the beginning of summer, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Star Trek, Up, Night at the Museum: Battle for the Smithsonian, and Dance Flick (I didn't choose the last one, let me say that right now). So far, with the exception of Dance Flick, the movies have been quite good. I was hoping to see Terminator Salvation, but might have to wait for DVD on that. I have been told that I need to see The Hangover. As my co-worker described it, I was laughing so hard I couldn't breathe. Definitely a good review if I've ever heard one. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs looks good even if my youngest seems suddenly afraid of dinosaurs, and Year One would be worth watching just to see Michael Cera. (Superbad rules!!!) I'm sure there are other movies worth seeing this summer, but I can't think of them now.

I have a new TV crush. Jensen Ackles of Supernatural is hawt! Supercute and has that nice Texas drawl thing going on. Saw an episode where he took off his shirt. Mm, mm, mm, mm mm. The show isn't too bad either. Thought I'd mention that since I don't think I've ever watched anything on that CW channel before now. I think I'm a bit out of the demographic they're pandering to. Although I have to say that it seems that my childhood/teenage years are coming back around. C'mon 90210 and Melrose Place, shaggy haircuts and skinny jeans, Tranformers, GI Joe, etc. Soon they'll be bringing back parachute pants and mullett cuts. Ugh and shudder.

So we are now in hurricane season. I hate to jinx it by saying anything at all about it, but with my luck we'll get a cat 5 storm coming through here soon. I'm just that lucky, and I wonder why I haven't won the Powerball yet. Go figure. We should probably be prepping now by cleaning out our garage and the yard to get any loose stuff up and out of there, but we're not. I'm the biggest procrastinator and I am sure this year will be no different than the last seven. I'll be in line with the other procrastinators hours before the storm's about to hit trying to stock up on bottled water and Chef Boyardee. Good times, good times.

Had to get new tires on the ol' beast. Talk about a beating there. $800 for four tires and an alignment. Yikes. Though they did give me some nice valve caps that I am sure will be stolen soon. Why you ask? Because the last ones that came on the SUV (nice metal caps too) were taken and replace with the cheap plastic ones. Why anyone would feel the need to steal valve stem caps I have no idea. Obviously, someone has time on their hands.

Well, I think that's enough babbling for one day. Stay tuned for more random thoughts. :)

TLC - Not so much

I just got done watching the much anticipated "Jon & Kate Plus 8" premiere. Having seen all the press (how could you not with Kate being on the cover of People) I was trying to go in with an open mind. I used to love this show. The kids were so cute, watching the mom and dad try to balance everything, it was inspiring. After a while though, it stopped being about their lives and how they did day to day activities and became more about all the trips (Utah, Oprah, San Diego, Florida, Hawaii), plastic surgery, hair plugs, and their "showings". This became more and more disheartening. Also, whatever happened to all their "friends and family" that were shown on previous seasons. They've all been phased out. Funny how that happens. It's starting to give credence to the brother's story that she wanted them off because TLC was wanting to compensate the other people. (Her own brother was outing her, that should say something.)

I know that the show is edited in certain ways but it certainly became more about Kate and how she presented herself and her family. It's pretty obvious that Jon doesn't want to do the show anymore. Kate seems more and more fake. This could be the editing but it seems that it's all an act. Like when Joel came up and said thank you for the party. He said it and she ignored him. Then he said it again and one of the moms said, "Ahhh" and then she put on the act of the loving mom complete with the fakey, "the kids said, 'Thank you Mommy' which just melted my heart." Whatever.

I'm certainly not saying I hope they get divorced but I would think that if they really wanted to work it out, they would have said that the marriage and family were much higher on the priority scale than the show. TLC should take the show off! Let these people work on their lives privately and if it works out, great. If not, okay to that too. These kids are going to be affected more than anyone else. Leave them alone!!!! For the kids sake, cancel the show! I'm sure they have more than enough money to take care of the kids for life, just look at the million dollar home they're living in now.

Summertime

I'm surprised I still have a Blogger account as it has been so long since last I posted. I know, the tragedy of it all. Still it is almost summertime (the season of movies, not season of temperature as if you use temp as a requirement it is summertime 9 months out of the year down here) the movie studios are on overdrive to get you to spend your hard-earned dollars seeing their many big-budget features. Noticably absent is a big Will Smith movie. Totally breaking the streak Will. As I am a big-time movie buff/sucker, I have already partaken of a few big name movies and so far, not too bad.

Saw the X-Men Origins: Wolverine. If nothing else, go to see Hugh Jackman in all his shirtless gloriousness. Ryan Reynolds isn't too bad either though no shirtlessness to speak of. I'm no comic book fan so I don't know the history of these characters and if it jives with what the Marvel world says is supposed to happen so I was quite happy to watch in my comic book ignorance. Good times.

Also saw Star Trek - the reloaded version. Less cheese, more action. Plus who doesn't love Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) and John Cho (Harold and Kumar...) as Scotty and Sulu. Love them. Good effects, comic relief and really glad they didn't go overboard with the ol' cliche Star Trek lines. There were a few but well-placed.

What's coming up? Terminator: Salvation, aka the movie Christian Bale went apesh*t on some poor director's assistant on. Really Christian? You're an actor, not curing cancer or negotiating world peace. Get over yourself. Hope the movie is halfway decent otherwise he looks more like a douche than initally believed. Night at the Museum 2 will probably be seen by me and the kids. Looks okay, love Hank Azaria (he's Moe from Simpsons folks!) and Steve Coogan so hope it doesn't suck. Up looks like a cute movie and so fax Pixar hasn't disappointed with their movies.

Anything else going on this summer? Well, kids are off of school soon (oh how I miss summer vacations) and hurricane season is just around the corner (joy of joys) so that should be fun. Not really.

Updates should be forthcoming on movies, news or whatever fits my fancy for the day.

8 is more than enough

I've been reading some stories about the mom who recently gave birth to eight babies. While I feel for these children as they may have a rough time ahead for them, I have to wonder about the mental state of their mother. It was bad enough to hear about other parents of multiple births dealing with the trials and tribulations associated with that number of children, but to hear that this woman is single, unemployed and has six other children, I immediately thought, "What the hell was she thinking?!?"

The cynic in me immediately thinks she's in it for the fame and/or money. Why not when companies tend to shower gifts--to include homes and cars--on the families of multiples? I think, though, that this woman had no idea what kind of flack she was getting when she went into this. Already companies are shying away from her due to possible bad publicity. Associating your company name with a possibly irresponsible parent tends to look bad. I'm not saying from the jump that she is a bad parent, far from it, but the information provided so far doesn't look good.

This brings up another point. Why are these people profitting from this semi-accident of fate? You don't see Proctor & Gamble, Gerber or Graco showering gifts on parents of single-birth children. For the most part, these families had these litters of kids (really there is no other term to describe it) due to fertility treatments. I say if the families can afford the fertility treatment, they should be planning on all the expenses associated with this kind of birth, including hospital costs. I hate to be one of those people, but I don't think we (the taxpayers) should be footing the bill for someone who can't pay the exorbidant costs. It is supposed that the hospital bill alone for the octuplets will be in excess of $1 million. How's she going to pay for it? We'll probably end up paying for it.

Another point is about the ethics of it all. When the McCaugheys announced about their septuplets and were asked about the selective reduction of the embryos to give some of the babies a better chance at survival, they responded something to the effect of it was God's will that they had that many kids. No it wasn't. It was science's will. Don't play the holier than thou card on this when you needed scientific intervention just to get pregnant. I'm not saying that it's not great that science can help families that may otherwise not be able to have children, but to say that it somehow was preordained by God to happen that way is a crock! Get off the soap box and admit what it is. This woman had no reason to have eight embryos implanted when all the fertility experts say they only implant one, maybe two max. This woman was cracked or was in it for the glory. They need to get her off the air now and not let her profit from this at all otherwise you'll have other crackpots trying for 9 or 10 or 12 babies at a time.

C'mon, really?

I understand that it is the job of every magazine out there to sell more than other magazines, but when the headline to sell such magazines is about Jessica Simpson and her weight, really? I mean it seems that people can't get anything right. If they gain a few pounds, they're fat. Lose some weight and they're too skinny. Give us a break!

I have weight to lose, I don't dispute that. I am the fitness infomercial queen. If you've seen an infomercial on it, I probably own the product. But this is not the mixed message you need to be sending young girls and women. Even my 10 year old says she's worried she's getting fat. How sad is that? This is what the media is doing to our children. Well, that and the fact that you can't walk into a "fashionable" store and find anything over a size 2. I'm exagerrating but not by much. We need to go back to the times when being curvy was good. I think I read that Marilyn Monroe was like a size 14 and she was the ideal at the time. We have to get back to that!

Anger Management Needed

I continue to read the news and continue to get pissed off everytime I read it. Mainly it has to do with the bailouts and the economy and the state of the country. I'm no political analyst or economic genius, but can someone please explain to me why the banks/investment firms keep getting money from the government with no accountability (and I mean no accountability), but the government is giving the auto companies that employ way more people a super hard time about getting money? I'm pretty sure the big 3 aren't failing due to majorly bad decisions in their business model. I'm sure there are a few but not on the scale of the banks.

I read that people were asking the banks what they did with the money and either a) they didn't know or b) refused to tell. Excuse me, but if you're receiving money--especially taxpayer money--you need to account for every single penny and tell us how it was spent, by whom and how it's being paid back. I don't want to hear that we helped bail out B of A and then their CEO spent $1 million to redecorate his office after he asked for money to help out the company. I also don't want to hear that the company needs more money just to buy another company. If you don't have to money to buy it on your own, you don't buy. Save up money and then buy it when you have the cash. Sounds like they need some lessons in economics 101.

This is another thing that bugs me. You hear how the state of the economy is dire. That people are losing their jobs left and right and the spending is so low right now. Well, if people don't have jobs to make money, they're not going to be spending money which makes the spending even less which causes companies to lay off more people. Vicious circle this is. However, when you read that Pfizer laid off 8,000 people but then spent billions, billions, of dollars to buy Wyeth, it's a bit disheartening. How can you tell all these people that we can't afford to keep you and then spend that kind of money to buy another company. What is wrong with these companies?

Another thing is that 9 out of the 10 banks that received government money still have the same CEOs in place. Well, apparently they sucked at their jobs if they managed to run the company into the red enough to ask for a government handout. If it were you, me or some schmoe off the street and did this, we'd be fired in a heartbeat. But these guys not only don't get fired, they continue to receive bonuses and we're not talking a little somethin'-somethin' on the side. These are 7 and 8-figure bonuses, for being incompetent. Don't screw up on a little scale, that would get you fired. Screw up on a massive scale and you can keep your job and continue to get promoted. Yeah. That's a good message for today's youth.

I am constantly amazed at the way this country and the justice system works. We have our own mini-Madoff case going on down here with some real estate broker taking a bunch of money from investors and not delivering on the promises. He's currently on trial for stealing a bunch of money. Unfortunately, I, and many others, believe that even if convicted there won't be much done in the way of punishment. Why you ask? Because he's married to a local news anchorwoman and her father has boatloads of cash.

This is what gets me. If you or I or some schmoe off the street stole $20 from someone, we'd be in jail faster than you can say "plea bargin" but if you steal millions of dollars, well then it's a long drawn out process with the defendent most likely getting a slap on the wrist. Just look at that Madoff guy who stole billions, billions (as in starting with a "b"), and he's still not in jail. People have committed suicide because they lost their life savings because of this guy and he's still not in jail. What is wrong with this picture? A lot I think.

They put the BS in BCS

The national championship game has been played and, unfortunately, the Florida Gators have been crowned. They played well against the Oklahoma Sooners and the game was a good one. However, this whole BCS crap needs some serious overhauling.

As you know, I've never been a big fan of the BCS because it just doesn't make sense to me. I think you need some sort of doctorate in astrophysics and aeronautical engineering to figure out between strength of schedule and quality wins how they come up with who ends up at the top of the list. I say that this year in college football has all but cemented the reasoning behind needing a playoff system.

At the end of all the bowl games you end up with three one-loss teams and one no-loss team. The undefeated team, Utah, got totally hosed in the fact that they beat--quite soundly--an Alabama team that had been No. 1 in the polls but ended up falling to UF in the SEC Championship game. The argument being that they belong to the Mountain West Conference (or whatever it is) and thus, do not have a hard schedule or teams where they can gain quality wins. I'd say the same could be said for the Pac-10 and no one is saying that USC shouldn't be given a shot, but maybe that's just me.

Then there was the whole six degrees of winning in the Big 12. Oklahoma ended up number 1 in the polls after losing to Texas who lost to Texas Tech who lost to Oklahoma. I know, crazy huh? Texas gave a good game against Ohio State, but that's not exactly a good argument considering how bad the Big Ten has become. Oh well. And don't get me started on how unfair it was for Texas Tech to not even get into the Big 12 championship or a BCS game because of the BCS BS rules about more than two teams from a conference, etc. What about Notre Dame who have sucked for a long time but still get in? Huh, what about them? Make them join a conference!

This whole thing is just wrong on so many levels. Kids and teams get screwed because of the politics and campaigning of other schools. Bleh, let them play and then see who's left standing after the dust settles.

Suck on that AP poll at life.sa.laugh@hotmail.com.

WTF 2009 Update

So we've all seen the news about the bailouts of the finanical sector of the county. This was pushed through the Senate and Congress because it was absolutely vital to saving the economy. At least that's what they told us taxpayers to justify using our money to save these companies. If this is the case, WTF? I read this and thought, REALLY? For SERIOUS? If you, me or any other Joe-schmoe tried this even with our household budget, we'd be up a creek. But apparently you can do this with billions, billions, of money that doesn't belong to you. Also, you can be totally rewarded for being completely incompetent. 'Tis the American dream right?

What is wrong with this picture? I was always taught that if you did a good job, you should be rewarded. If you did a poor job, there would be some sort of negative reinforcement. I'm no economics genius (having only taken one economics class in high school) but I'm pretty sure if you sucked so much at your job that you needed a government bailout, you should probably be fired, not get tens of millions of dollars in bonuses. Now all us hard-working, non-criminal types will have to pay for this mess. And we'll keep paying for stuff like this until it gets fixed. My suggestion? I say we clean out all these big financial companies, find out who they lobbied to get all this help and get rid of them because they obviously didn't think this through as there were little to no oversight or regulation on how this money was to be spent. Ridiculous!!!

Is it just me? at life.sa.laugh@hotmail.com.
